‘I’m not out to ruin Ronaldo’

Cordoba defender Edimar has forgiven Cristiano Ronaldo and insists he does not want to tarnish the career of the ‘best player in the world’.

The Real Madrid forward became embroiled in an ugly clash during Saturday’s match at Nuevo Arcangel, which Los Blancos won 2-1, as he proceeded to kick the Chievo loanee and lash out at his teammate Jose Angel Crespo before being shown a straight red card.

“I expect a normal punishment. I know Cristiano apologised over social media. On my part, he’s forgiven,” Edimar told reporters on Saturday.

“Cristiano’s head was a little hot and he was a little frustrated because things weren’t going very well for him.

“But it’s something which can happen to any of us. I think that’s what happened and that’s it. I forgive Cristiano Ronaldo and hold no grudge.

“It was a moment when his head was a little hot. Things weren’t going well for Real Madrid, and he was a little nervous [for that reason].

“I just looked at social media, but after the game we didn’t talk. I haven’t spoken to him on the phone yet.

“It’s an incident which is difficult to speak about. I don’t want to comment on this controversy [after this interview].

“I hope [Ronaldo] remains the best player in the world and things continue as they were in the football world.

“It happened from a set play. It wasn’t an attempt at aggression. He hit my legs and mouth, nothing more. What I mean is that those responsible understand what can happen on the pitch.

“[I hope] Cristiano receives a normal suspension, no more than that. I don’t want to hurt him and I hope he remains the best player in the world.

“[A moment like that has] never happened to me, but we all understand because we give 300 percent on the pitch, whether you play for Cordoba, Real Madrid or Barcelona.”
