Sergio: ‘Espanyol to take initiative’

Espanyol boss Sergio Gonzalez says his players must get off on the front foot in their last 16 second-leg Copa del Rey tie with Valencia on Tuesday.

The Catalans trail 2-1 from the first leg at Mestalla and Sergio is asking them to take the game to Nuno Espirito Santo’s men from the first whistle.

“We must take the initiative without going crazy, while we need to maintain our balance and face up to our opponents,” he told a Press conference.

“If anything we have to take chances to win the game. We played a great match at the Mestalla and now we’ve got to finish the job.

“This will be a typical Cup match, with everything that involves, but we are at home against a great rival and have the quarter-finals within our reach. All the ingredients are there to make this a great game.

“We have players who are experienced enough in these type of clashes and we know one goal will be enough for us to go through. We have 90 minutes to get it.”

Sergio believes the fans at the Power8 Stadium will also have a key role to play if Espanyol are to progress to the next round.

“Whenever we play at home the supporters are crucial, even more so than myself and the players, and it’s nice they are excited. We are very hopeful.”
