Marcelino: ‘Villarreal deserved more’

Villarreal boss Marcelino felt his players deserved more after the 1-0 last 16 Copa del Rey first leg victory over Real Sociedad at El Madrigal.

Substitute Denis Cheryshev got the only goal of the game on 71 minutes, less than 10 minutes after coming off the bench, but Marcelino argued the Yellow Submarine should have scored more having dominated the encounter.

“We deserved a better result because we were far superior to La Real and had enough clear opportunities, so it was disappointing after my team played like that,” he told a post-match Press conference.

“La Real are always a powerful team on their own ground, but 1-0 is always a good result as if we score there it forces our opponents to score three against us. We had to make sure we didn’t concede towards the end of the game.

“Right now I’m extremely satisfied with the team’s performance and also tremendously proud, especially with the work put in by the players who normally don’t play as much, but we must forget about the Cup now and concentrate on the League.”
