Marcelino hails ‘important’ victory

Marcelino spoke of his delight at seeing Villarreal end their four-match barren spell during Sunday night's 2-1 victory over Getafe.

The Yellow Submarine fought off late pressure from the visitors to secure a crucial win at El Madrigal, and the Coach found the result all the more pleasing in light of the side's mounting injury list.

"We could have had five points, but this was an important victory because we had many injuries. It's allowed some squad players to earn important roles in the team," he was quoted as saying by EFE.

"We did everything we could. Our opponents were better than us in the first 15 minutes because they put together some very rapid transitions.

"After that, I think we started to combine well. We scored two very good goals and created enough problems for our opponents.

"We controlled the match until Getafe pulled a goal back from a throw-in. Everyone on the pitch was affected by the uncertainty of the change in dynamics.

"The players did really well. [Tomas] Pina was excellent and it's great news because he hadn't played much, so we're delighted for him.

"Having a team with an average age of 23 years makes it difficult to win games because you don't have that other player who can give you experience.

"Therefore, it's very important that the fans support us when the result is tight. The fans gave us that support, and it revitalised the team at important moments.

"All we wanted was for the match to end."
