Del Bosque explains Costa absence

Vicente del Bosque has revealed he spoke with Chelsea before deciding not to call-up Diego Costa to the Spain squad.

Costa has been left off the list for the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier against Belarus and the friendly with Germany a few days later.

Instead there are places for Celta Vigo forward Nolito, Napoli’s Jose Callejon and Juventus striker Alvaro Morata, as well as Isco.

“We have reached the decision with doctors from Chelsea,” Del Bosque confirmed at a Press conference, AS reports.

“He is taking a break because of discomfort in his pelvis.

The fitness of Costa and Spain’s handling of the striker has been a contentious point between Del Bosque and Blues manager Jose Mourinho.

Explaining why Callejon and Nolito have been named in the party, Del Bosque said he wants to take advantage of their recent good form, adding their involvement doesn’t mean the end for Fernando Llorente or Alvaro Negredo.

“We need skilled people across the pitch. They have goals and we want to take advantage of this form and also increase the number of people called-up,” he confirmed.

“I really haven’t discarded anyone. I don’t rule anyone out unless it is Xavi Hernandez and Xabi Alonso, who ended their careers with the team.

“The other cases are potential players for the Spain team.”

Regarding Isco – and Malaga’s Ignacio Camacho, another new face in the squad – Del Bosque said their service at youth level counted in their favour.

“Camacho has been with the kids, was a champion at Under-17 and Under-21 level,” he noted.

“He is a boy of 24 and reflects how well Malaga are doing. He has been in our thinking.

“We’re thinking of Mario, we’re thinking of Bruno…they can come, they’re on Camacho’s level.

“We have always thought about Isco even when he hasn’t always been a starter. He was with the Under-21s because he was needed against Serbia and now we have decided to call him up.

“We know Isco and he has always been a good guy to have with the national team.”
