Fran Escriba believes Elche deserved to beat Espanyol but warned it is only one win, with many more needed to avoid relegation.
Jonathas scored twice for Elche, with Christian Stuani scoring a late penalty for Espanyol, and Escriba told reporters post-match that he had rarely seen a game like it.
“This is one of those days in your life that is marked by extreme professional suffering. We deserved to win because of it,” he said, Marca reports.
“I’m very proud of my players. They deserved to win. There was a union between the team and the fans and how my players delivered.
“We’ve strengthened our options but even with this win we haven’t done anything. There is a lot of work ahead.
“I don’t know if our football was that good but we’ve delivered a performance and that’s comforting. We won with our delivery and our fight.
“Victory means nothing but it is important for the players. My objective is the group and nothing more.”
