‘Difficult for anyone to catch Messi’

Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu believes that when Lionel Messi surpasses Telmo Zarra as La Liga’s record scorer, he’ll be hard to catch.

Messi netted against Eibar, his 250th League goal, taking him one behind Zarra. A Messi goal against Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu would take him level and a brace or more would set a new record.

“He’ll reach it where he reaches it,” Bartomeu said, AS reports.

“Messi is having a great season and he only didn’t get more goals against Eibar because their goalkeeper was very good.

“He’ll beat the record and he’ll be very hard for anyone to catch after that.”

Luis Suarez could make his official Barca debut in the Clasico but when pressed on the topic of the Uruguay international, Bartomeu insisted it was a decision for the Coach.

“If Suarez plays or not is a question to ask Luis Enrique,” he insisted.

“The Coach will decide but the good thing is that Suarez is available. We want to see him play but it’s for the Coach to decide.”

Bartomeu also confirmed his intention to remain as President until 2016 before calling elections, having replaced Sandro Rosell last year after Rosell resigned.

“I’ve explained to the members that we are going to finish this mandate and try to continue from June 2016 for the new stadium and making the Palau a reality.”
