Ronaldo ‘didn’t influence Portugal Coach’

Cristiano Ronaldo has dismissed the suggestion he played a role in the sacking of Paulo Bento as Portugal Coach.

Bento was dismissed after Portugal made a slow start to Euro 2016 qualifying, having also overseen a disappointing World Cup.

Fernando Santos has been appointed in his place but Ronaldo has stressed at a Press conference that the decision had nothing to do with him or any other player.

“I’m not going to answer that. It’s not worth it,” he replied, AS reports, when the subject was raised.

“I pass those accusations off. I prefer to say positive things about my Coaches. I’ve always received good lessons from Coaches and learned from them.

“In football there are cycles and Paulo Bento’s ended with great sorrow for us. There had to be a change and in the 11 years I’ve been with the national team, it’s always from the President.

“He decides, never a player or a group of players, to influence the decision of a director or a President. This situation makes me sad. I’m disappointed.”

Ronaldo also rejected the notion he expressed disapproval over Santos’ decision to restore Ricardo Carvalho and Tiago Mendes to the national team.

Both had been long-term absentees, Carvalho banned and then ignored after walking out on the squad when learning he wasn’t given a starting place, and Tiago retiring from international football.

“I see their returns, as well as the call up of everyone else, as good things,” Ronaldo countered.

“The team has a great present and a bright future. The new cycle will be good for the team.”
