Report: Casillas to keep his place

Iker Casillas’ place in the Real Madrid team is not under threat, reports in Spain say, and the captain will play against Basel in the Champions League.

Casillas was the target of part of the Santiago Bernabeu crowd’s condemnation as Los Blancos lost at home on Saturday night to Atletico Madrid.

The goalkeeper was criticised for failing to deal with a corner for Atletico’s first goal and there have been calls for Carlo Ancelotti to turn to Keylor Navas.

But AS reports that the Coach will keep faith in Casillas for the midweek fixture, and doesn’t feel Casillas has been at fault for any of the goals Madrid have conceded this season.

Ancelotti is though concerned about the amount of goals going in – six in League two games – and if the defence doesn’t improve, Casillas’ place will eventually be in doubt.

Navas is still considered the Cup goalkeeper and Casillas’ back-up, a position Casillas found himself in last season as he covered for Diego Lopez.

Lopez was sold to Milan over the summer having kept goal for most of the League campaign, with Casillas wearing the gloves in Europe and the Copa del Rey.
