Casillas: Madrid mistakes my fault

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has insisted he can cope with criticism from the Santiago Bernabeu crowd after Atletico Madrid’s derby win.

Tiago Mendes opened the scoring for the champions after Los Blancos again failed to deal with a corner and Casillas was later whistled by the fans as they voiced their displeasure.

Cristiano Ronaldo equalised for the home side, only for Arda Turan to score in the second half and give Atletico a second consecutive win at the Bernabeu.

“We feel sick because we’ve worked all week and the team has no reward,” Casillas said, according to Marca.

“It hurts us as much as it hurts the fans. We weren’t up to par.

“The public are in charge and if they need to whistle they will. I’ve got to keep working and respond in the best way I know, which is to play football.”

Reflecting on the match itself, Casillas added he didn’t feel Madrid deserved to lose the game.

“The second half was a blow. The team was controlling Atletico and then in a phenomenal action from Arda, we conceded the goal,” the captain continued.

“The result is perhaps a little unfair. A draw would have been more appropriate, but Atletico know how to work these matches and you have to congratulate them. Sometimes these things happen to us.

“I understand there’s a complex we’re living with because we’ve conceded a lot of goals through set-pieces and although it’s a collective issue, I feel responsible because I have to direct my teammates.

“We will try to fix a problem that is accumulating.”
