Ancelotti: Madrid lacked intensity

Carlo Ancelotti says his Real Madrid players understood the tactics in the derby defeat to Atletico Madrid but they lacked intensity.

Goals from Tiago Mendes and Arda Turan, either side of a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty, gave the champions a second consecutive League win at Santiago Bernabeu.

Ancelotti told reporters after the match that the problem his team has is a habit of poor second halves, as well as needing to be more forceful.

“We don’t have a problem with the system. The problem was a lack of intensity,” the Italian said, according to Marca.

“We have to analyse why there was a slump in the second half and how we fix it. The first half was good, like against Real Sociedad. The second wasn’t.

“We haven’t repeated the good first half. We lost pace and aggression. We’re paying for the mistakes we’re making.

“There are moments were things don’t work out and we have to change and react quickly.

“The early season isn’t good but it’s only the beginning. We’ll fix it.”

Ancelotti was also asked about the crowd’s reaction to Iker Casillas, as the captain appeared to be jeered by the fans after Madrid conceded another set-piece goal.

“A goal conceded at the near post is not the fault of the goalkeeper,” Ancelotti countered.

“I didn’t hear any whistles. I was focused on the game and I just think of tactics. I don’t hear the supporters.”

The Coach also explained why he substituted Alvaro Arbeloa and moved Sergio Ramos to right-back, and gave his impressions of debutant Javier Hernandez.

“Ramos is a centre-back and we’re confident with him there. I changed Arbeloa because he’d been booked. He played well,” Ancelotti added.

“Chicharito entered at a time when it wasn’t easy. He has to keep working. He can be helpful.”
