Garcia: Atletico start from scratch

Raul Garcia believes Atletico Madrid will be in the mix for trophies next season but says last year’s success is no guarantee.

The midfielder has spoken at a Press conference and touched on a number of subjects, including the big-name exits from the club and the appointment of Diego Godin as a captain.

“The intention is to compete, to think that the club is above any player, and the responsibility to wear this shirt with commitment,” AS reports Garcia as saying.

“All this makes us live up to what we can do.

“We don’t give importance [to the players who have left]. There are players here. Those who aren’t, we wish them luck. They’ve done what they had to do when they’ve been at Atletico and we have to think about where we are.

“The group is good. Many of the starters remain and it’s a competitive group.

“Both [Godin] and I and Gabi as captains have a responsibility to the group. We are three players that are a good representation of the group.

“The whole group is committed, always fighting. Godin has been elevated to captain and has never let the group down.”

Garcia was also asked about the coming season, and if Atletico can match their success in winning the title and reaching the Champions League final.

“We trust that we will be in the group [fighting for trophies],” he replied.

“You have to trust yourself. Last year doesn’t work. We start from scratch and with full confidence.”
