Simeone: Atletico still alive

Diego Simeone believes Atletico Madrid’s draw with Real Madrid means their title challenge is ‘still alive’.

A late Cristiano Ronaldo goal denied Atletico three points and maintained Real’s three-point lead over their city rivals at the top of the table.

Simeone told his post-match Press conference that the point hasn’t ended Atleti’s title push, and also restrained himself from criticising the referee after a fractious tie.

“We went behind but reacted really well,” Simeone said.

“We started to play between the lines, press them on the shoulder and create chances.

“In the second half we were good. We had opportunities but couldn’t find the final pass to make it 3-1.

“The team put in great work. I’m proud of the squad, the men who play against everything.

“What counts is the final result. The team showed today it’s alive. That might bother some, but it’s still alive.

“Three points off the top with 12 games left is very good.”

Simeone was asked for his thoughts on the performance of the officials, and also the incident that saw Mono Burgos sent to the stands.

“[Burgos] said nothing before he was sent off.

“No, no, I’m sorry, I’m not saying anything about the referee.”
