Herrera wants Champions League

Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera believes the club can reach the Champions League this season.

Herrera was speaking to Mundo Deportivo and said that while a top four place remains the club’s target, he was reluctant to limit their ambitions.

“Top four would be great but I don’t want to put a roof on things.

“I still think the dream is to play in the Champions League. I also think we have the capacity and potential to do it but we can’t forget where we came from.

“We had a very difficult, tumultuous year in which we didn’t live up to our potential.

“We are privileged to be how we are now but we cannot forget we came from the mud.”

Herrera however rejected the suggestion that the reason Athletic are in better form this year is that they have a deeper squad.

“We always had a deep squad,” he argued.

“What happens is that Coach decides to use it or not.

“It is legitimate for a Coach to rely on some players more than others but we have a deep squad.

“Ernesto [Valverde] uses more players and we are all responding.”
