Pepe has stressed the importance of Real Madrid’s win over Espanyol as they chase down League leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
The Portugal international scored the game’s only goal and believes the victory could prove crucial as the season goes on.
“I helped my team with the goal but the most important thing is we fought a tough match against a fighting team.
“We knew it was important to win because [Atletico and Barca] tied yesterday and this win closes the gap.”
Madrid now trail the front pair by three points after Pepe’s header, scored from a Luka Modric free-kick.
Pepe paid tribute to the midfielder, saying: “Luka is a fine player and is helping us a lot.”
And with another of his teammates up for the Ballon d’Or award, Pepe believes the prize should come to Madrid.
“I would vote for Cristiano because what he did last year was very important. He deserves it.”
