Atleti off to Baku next week

Atletico Madrid will play a friendly against a select XI of Azerbaijan players next week as part of their sponsorship deal.

The club reached a reported €12m deal with the Republic of Azerbaijan at the turn of the year to run their logo on the team’s shirts for the rest of the season.

The agreement also included terms such as Coach Diego Simeone overseeing a summer coaching clinic in the country and the team playing a friendly in the region in the future.

The club have confirmed that that game will take place on April 30, with the squad flying out to Baku for an 8pm local time kick-off at the Tofig Bakhramov Republican Stadium.

“This trip also complements the expansion strategy of Atletico Madrid, the club is looking to introduce its brand in to new markets in order to identify opportunities for business growth for the international club,” read Atletico’s statement released on the game next week.

“In this area, Atletico Madrid has been strengthening ties with lots of people and countries. This trip to Baku serves the main objective of promoting the team through the image of Azerbaijan in the world and spreading the resources, benefits and the rich culture of the Land of Fire, as well as to promote bilateral relations between Spain and Azerbaijan.

“Throughout the visit, the delegation will take part in different sporting activities, social and institutional, as s the norm when the club travels outside of Spain.”
