Atleti set for Azerbaijan deal

Atletico Madrid are reportedly set to secure a shirt sponsorship deal to run from now until the end of next season.

The club signed an initial deal with the Republic of Azerbaijan to have ‘Azerbaijan Land of Fire’ displayed on their shirts for the derby with Real Madrid.

Part of the ‘strategic agreement’, which was rumoured at the time to be worth several million euros for the capital club, saw them agree to a future friendly against an Azerbaijan select XI, to help develop a plan to train young athletes in the country and to have Coach Diego Simeone oversee a training clinic in the country in the summer.

The agreement was believed to be only for the game against Madrid, but with talks continuing over a longer term deal, Atleti kept the slogan displayed on their shirts for the remaining League matches of the season as a ‘token of goodwill’.

The club are reported by AS today to have had two other sponsorship deals to also consider at the end of December, with offers from Chinese technology firm Huawei, who sponsored the shirt last season and from United Arab Emirates also tabled.

However, Atleti are set to make their first signing of January an 18-month extension of their deal with Azerbaijan, which reports today suggest will be worth €12m.
