Simeone eyes competitive friendly

Diego Simeone is looking to make the most of Atletico Madrid’s trip out to Azerbaijan by seeing that their arranged friendly is competitive.

Atleti have travelled out to Baku this week for a match against an Azerbaijan select XI as part of a sponsorship deal the club signed in the winter with the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Madrid side’s Coach is at least looking to make the most of the obligation, which is set to be followed up in the summer with his heading of a coaching clinic.

“We are very pleased to be here in Azerbaijan, we have been well received, with great hospitality and we are having a very nice experience,” Simeone told reporters in anticipation of Tuesday’s match.

“We expect that [Tuesday’s] game will be a good one and people will enjoy the players that they usually see on television, it will be a nice show and will be enjoyable for all the people who go to the stadium.

“We will try to do well. To try to win is what we want and how we like to play. And for that, the fans will go home much happier.

“It’s also important that it’s competitive for the home side as it will serve as a great experience looking ahead.”
