Martins buys out Levante contract

Obafemi Martins is no longer a Levante player after paying his buyout clause this evening ahead of completing a move to Seattle Sounders.

The Nigerian publicly pushed for a switch to the MLS outfit last week after they came in with an offer, but Los Granotes held firm that his €3m buyout clause needed to be met.

Following on from reports today that the American side were prepared to now put up that fee, Martins has been reported at the Spanish Football League’s offices today.

The 28-year-old has paid the €3m and bought out his Levante contract and is now expected to sign a deal with Seattle in the coming hours.

Superdeporte say that 50 per cent of the money will go to Levante, whilst the other 50 per cent will be due to a Turkish investment fund that helped secure his transfer last summer. This would be the split in the transfer fee if Martins is held accountable through FIFA guidelines for talking to Seattle without Levante’s permission.

Martins has not trained with his Levante teammates in the past few days, with it rumoured that they have been unhappy with his attitude in forcing through this move. The striker’s six months in Spain saw him net nine goals.
