Wenger: ‘Barca won’t sell Villa’

Arsene Wenger has conceded that Arsenal’s hopes of signing David Villa look to be over, with Barcelona unwilling to sell.

Arsenal were reported last night in negotiations with Barcelona over a proposed transfer for the striker, who since returning from serious injury this season has seen his first-team opportunities limited.

The Gunners were rumoured to have set aside a budget to make a late move for the 31-year-old and, according to reports in Britain, already had chief negotiator Dick Law out in Catalonia, ready to begin  talks with La Blaugrana.

However, manager Wenger commented on the situation this morning and indicated that no negotiations will be taking place.

“Barcelona do not want to sell David Villa. They've made that very clear,” the Frenchman told reporters, before making clear on that statement that he sees ‘no room for negotiation’ either.

The Gunners were believed to be prepared to pay up to €12m to take the former Valencia man to the Premier League this month, just as Barca were seen as willing to consider a sale on bids upwards of €15m.
