Real Madrid’s Chief Scout Juni Calafat identifies ‘dream’ defender for next summer, begins groundwork for move

It is no longer a secret that Real Madrid are highly keen on Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies. With neither of Ferland Mendy or Fran Garcia entirely convincing at the moment, Carlo Ancelotti has at times used Eduardo Camavinga there, but Los Blancos will look to bring in the Canadian international next summer.

BILD in Germany have previously reported that Bayern are willing to let Davies go for €50m next summer, when he enters the final year of his deal, which suggests that talks over a renewal are not going well. Real Madrid currently are looking at bringing that price down to €40m.

They now say that Real Madrid’s Chief Scout, Juni Calafat, has identified Davies as his ‘dream’ defensive signing for next summer, and as such is already working on making the move happen. As was the case with Jude Bellingham, this involves Calafat building a personal relationship with Davies and his camp, and ensuring that Davies knows just how much he is appreciated.

It is a strategy that Calafat has used successfully on multiple occasions, and indeed has seen many players turn down larger offers to sign for Real Madrid. The German outlet notes that they tend to hold the fee down, securing Bellingham’s signature for ‘just’ €100m too.

Davies no doubt would be a major upgrade as things stand on the left side. A flank of Davies and Vinicius Junior could well be the quickest in football, and after the Brazilian revealed that he too had done his bit to persuade Bellingham to head to the Santiago Bernabeu, it would be no surprise if the same had transpired with Davies. The Bayern left-back also holds a good friendship with David Alaba too, who made the same move two summers ago.
