Courtois wants Belgium improvement

Thibaut Courtois has said Belgium need to be more clinical in front of goal if they’re to progress in the World Cup.

The goalkeeper was part of the side that dispatched the United States 2-1 after extra time, with his American counterpart Tim Howard making a number of excellent saves to keep his side in the game.

AS reports Courtois as saying after the match that Belgium can’t afford to come up against a performance like that in the next round, against Argentina, if their finishing doesn’t get better.

“We’re happy to be through. We played a good game but we missed a lot of chances. Their goalkeeper was very good,” he said.

“[For the USA’s goal] it was a bad shot but I had no strength in my hand to deflect it. We have suffered. But still, the important thing is we went through.

“We have done very well from the last set piece. We were surprised by what we saw and I had to make a crucial save if we were to stay in.

“Argentina want to reach the final and are improving game by game. We need to go over this and see what we have.

“The victory belongs to everyone. It was a very demanding game with many substitutions and chances but the Coach prepared us well.”
