Spain seal comeback win

Spain got the Luis Enrique era and their Nations League campaign under way with a 2-1 win against England on Saturday.

First-half goals from Saul Niguez and Rodrigo Moreno cancelled out Marcus Rashford's opener at Wembley Stadium, although Spain were spared by a foul on David de Gea at the death.

With no Jordi Alba in the Spaniards' squad, Marcos Alonso was given his competitive debut at left-back, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

The countries last met at Wembley in November 2016, when Iago Aspas and Isco scored at the death to salvage La Roja a 2-2 draw.

Spain were caught on the break early on, when Rashford finished off Luke Shaw’s square ball at the far post, but Saul Niguez fired in the equaliser just two minutes later.

Having teed up Saul for the equaliser, Rodrigo was then at the right place at the right time to flick in a free kick.

England had no answer for Lucho’s spritely side as the first half drew to a close, although the restart began with terrible luck for Shaw, who went off in a neck brace after a nasty collision with Dani Carvajal.

Thiago Alcantara soon shaved Jordan Pickford’s bar with a perfectly-executed volley, but the Three Lions could count themselves unlucky.

Rashford broke into the box with a burst of pace, but his close-range finish was pushed away by his United teammate, before Welbeck was adjudged to have fouled De Gea when he netted the rebound from Sergio Ramos’ skewed clearance.
