England had no answer for Lucho’s spritely side as the first half drew to a close, although the restart began with terrible luck for Shaw, who went off in a neck brace after a nasty collision with Dani Carvajal.
Thiago Alcantara soon shaved Jordan Pickford’s bar with a perfectly-executed volley, but the Three Lions could count themselves unlucky.
Rashford broke into the box with a burst of pace, but his close-range finish was pushed away by his United teammate, before Welbeck was adjudged to have fouled De Gea when he netted the rebound from Sergio Ramos’ skewed clearance.
