Aspas: De Gea criticism ‘unfair’

Iago Aspas claims it is ‘unfair’ that some people want David de Gea to be replaced as Spain’s No 1 and felt ‘a bit of sadness’ after Julen Lopetegui’s exit.

There are growing calls for Kepa Arrizabalaga to keep goal against Iran on Wednesday after De Gea’s blunder cost Spain victory over Portugal in their World Cup opener, while Aspas was given his international breakthrough by the sacked Lopetegui.

“It’s a new day, he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world and its difficult for us to see him questioned like this,” the Celta Vigo striker told Radio Marca.

“It’s unfair that a change is being requested in the national team’s goal. We’re scrutinised in every position, but let’s have a bit of calm because we have one of the best goalkeepers in the world and we’re not going to kill him because of one mistake.

“Losing Lopetegui? It was a dish that didn’t taste good, but the Federation had their reasons and everyone has to look at themselves.

“The Coach always gave me a lot of confidence, from the first to last day he was here. and I’m grateful.

“I felt a bit of sadness, but you have to put yourself on the other side. Everyone will have their own opinions.”
