Barca demand Copa format change

Barcelona have requested a stop to the two-legged format of domestic cup competitions in Spanish football, it is reported.

The elections for the RFEF (Spanish FA) will be held next month with Juan Luis Larrea (pictured) expected to be sworn in, but the Catalan giants have requested this premise before offering their support.

Top-flight Spanish club enter the Copa at the last 32 stage with the sides competing in Europe drawn against teams from the lower divisions, with the other matches an open draw.

However, the Blaugrana are keen for fixture congestion to be cut down and for these matches to be played across just one leg, according to a report in Diario AS.

They also want this to apply to the Spanish Supercopa at the start of the season, which is also currently held across two matches.

The report concludes that is it possible the final of the Copa could be played overseas in future, in a similar format to the Coppa Italia.
