Celta’s Aspas denies racist remarks

Iago Aspas has denied making racist remarks to opponent Jefferson Lerma during Celta Vigo’s 1-0 win at Levante on Sunday.

Lerma accused Aspas in his interview after the game, but while the striker noted “what is said on the pitch stays on the pitch”, he also distanced himself from the alleged comments.

“What is said on the pitch, stays on the pitch,” he told the Galicians’ official website.

“That’s why I’m not going to reproduce what he told me. In any case, I did not call him what he attributed to me.”

The club added: “Celta wishes to emphasise its strong defence of fair play and respect among rivals, both inside and outside the field, values that are hallmarks of the club and that everyday are put into practice by each and every sky-blue team, from the youngest to the senior squad.”

Pione Sisto scored the only goal at Ciutat de Valencia to lift Celta into 10th in La Liga.
