New Granada boss Tony Adams has vowed to scrap the 3-4-3 formation that “wasn’t working” and “go for it”, starting against Celta Vigo on Sunday.
Adams takes over a Granada side seven points adrift of safety in La Liga, but the former Arsenal and England defender has wasted no time in stamping his mark on the Andalusians, bringing in ex-Premier League duo Kieran Richardson and Nigel Reo-Coker on trial.
“I do love coaching, I love being on the training pitch, but I think I’ve been honest with everyone, this is just until the end of the season,“ he said at a Press conference.
“Next season I think the team will need a Spanish coach, and we also have to look at what division we’ll be playing in.
“If we do pull off a miracle and we stay in La Liga, then yes, it will need to be a very different kind of manager compared to if we need to win promotion again get back in La Liga next season.
“One step at a time, we’re focused purely on this season for now, trying to get a reaction and getting some wins.
“I think they’re lacking confidence and morale has been low. I think the majority of the players are well prepared.
“Mentally is the thing I’ve been working on this week, to get them mentally prepared. Emotionally as well, because changes are always difficult for people.
“I personally felt that the 3-4-3 system that Lucas was employing, wasn’t working. We weren’t getting good results.
“The formation, I think we can change it and I have done. I think confidence has been growing, I’ve tried to make them feel like they’re great people and feel like they belong to Granada.
“Tactically, we’re going to try something a little bit different, there’s going to be a few different selections as well.
“Formations, selections and tactics, I think I’m going to employ different tactics tomorrow that hopefully will suit us.
“We’ve have nothing to lose, we have to fight, we have go for it and be very positive. It’s a clear message.
“Reo-Coker and Richardson? I’m not sure [yet]. Reo needs to lose a couple of kilos and I think he’s aware of that as well.
“Kieran is looking very promising. I said I would speak to them on Monday. I’ve been very impressed with their attitude and this is what I want.
“They are two good experienced professionals. I know they’ve given me what I wanted with their professionalism around the training facility, how to behave, how to be a good pro.
“We’ve got a lot of young and inexperienced players here, so they’re the first in on a morning and last to leave.
“It’s teaching the younger players how to behave. We’ll have to see, I said I’ll speak to them on Monday.
“I couldn’t get them signed up even if I wanted to. Spain closes down for the holidays.
“I’m going to go for it, I don’t think we’ve got anything to lose, but we’re not going to be reckless and stupid. I have a plan.
“In my experience if you play to draw, you end up getting beat. If you go for the win, you might nick a draw.
“You have to approach every game very positively and go for it, and we’re at home. I think the fans are going to expect it, I expect it, so I don’t think we’ll be sitting back.”
