Spain rally behind Pique

Two of Spain's senior players have leapt to Gerard Pique's defence as the RFEF considers hosting an upcoming friendly away from the Santiago Bernabeu.

The defender sarcastically thanked Kevin Roldan, the singer at Cristiano Ronaldo's controversial 30th birthday party, for helping Barcelona achieve a historic second treble during their end-of-season celebrations in June, and he has since faced the wrath of disgruntled madridistas.

“I don't think it's right to subject boos to a player who has always been committed to us and his country,” said Jordi Alba.

“His character means he doesn't take them to heart, but it's never nice to see.”

Pedro Rodriguez, meanwhile, added: “None of us like to see a player committed to the team being booed.

“We hope this issue gets resolved and are all with Gerard.”

Following a leaked video of Pique being taunted on his way home from a nightclub in Gijon after Spain's 2-0 victory over Slovakia on Saturday, AS claims the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is also considering changing the venue of La Roja's friendly against England on November 14.

The match is currently scheduled to be played at the Santiago Bernabeu, in which Spain will debut their kit for Euro 2016, but the governing body is reportedly aware that playing the match in Madrid may incite further bad blood.
