UEFA ban Ballesteros

UEFA have ruled that Sergio Ballesteros deliberately got himself booked in the Europa League group stages, so have banned him again.

The defender picked up a booking during the fourth minute of stoppage time in Los Granotes’ penultimate group phase game away to Helsingborg for time-wasting.

As his fourth card of the competition, it automatically triggered a one-game suspension that he served in Levante’s final group game at home to Hannover.

However, UEFA have taken action, noting ‘irregularities’ in the player’s behaviour in receiving that yellow card and have ruled that he deliberately got booked, so as to clear his card count and avoid a possible suspension in the knockout phase.

Subsequently and without appeal, Ballesteros has been banned for a further game and will now miss the first leg of his team’s Round of 32 clash with Olympiacos.
