Gurpegui denounces Madrid chants

Carlos Gurpegui revealed his frustration at the referee for not making a note of abusive chants aimed at himself during Athletic Bilbao’s defeat to Real Madrid.

Gurpegui was allegedly the target of abusive chants during the game referencing his failed drugs test of 2002 for nandrolone, something that he and Athletic have always protested his innocence over.

“The day [those chants at me] will end will be the day I retire,” reflected Gurpegui to reporters after the game.

“It has been 10 years and listen. The saddest thing is that you ask the referee to reflect it in his minutes and he tells you that he cannot hear anything. He said this as they were singing it.

“If this happened in other Leagues, it would have more significance. Perhaps the referee is not the one to do something, but to tell you that he cannot hear anything when you can listen to 90,000 people…”
