Two Spanish sleeping giants aiming for La Liga return this season

La Liga may be taking the weekend off, but that is not the case for one of the most exciting leagues in Europe: the Segunda Division. Matchday 32 is underway, and there is plenty of intrigue – especially when it comes to the battle for promotion.

Now is the ideal time for fans to buy Segunda Division tickets on fanatix, given that the business end of the season is underway. At this stage of the campaign, as many as 10 teams are in with a realistic chance of earning promotion – either automatically or via the play-offs – and two of those are among the biggest sleeping giants in Spanish football: Deportivo La Coruna and Malaga.

Both have spent time in the third tier of Spanish football at some stage in the last few years, and now, there is a considerable chance that both are back in La Liga come the summer. Deportivo currently sit 2nd in the standings, with Malaga only a point back in 4th – both have had polar opposite seasons compared to another of Spain’s biggest underperformers of recent years: Real Zaragoza.

Last season, Deportivo and Malaga finished 15th and 16th respectively, tied on 53 points. Collectively, they have taken a significant step forward from last summer, and for the former, one of the reasons for this has been Yeremay Hernandez’s continued excellent form. The 23-year-old, who has been linked with several top clubs in the last 18 months, has 10 goals and seven assists in 27 Segunda appearances.

As for Malaga, they have particularly been excellent in attack, with Chupe (16 goals) being their top scorer. David Larubbia and Dani Lorenzo, who both came from the ranks at La Rosaleda, have been equally impressive for Juan Funes’ side, who have only lost two of their last 16 matches in the league.

Pressure will be on Deportivo and Malaga in coming weeks

Deportivo and Malaga have done very well up until now, but with the pressure firmly on now that the run-in has started, they will need to step up further if they are to ensure a return to La Liga for next season.

There will be many neutrals cheering on Deportivo and Malaga in their respective bids to return to La Liga. Both clubs will believe they can end their wait for promotion back to the top flight of Spanish football, and if they can, it would be a magnificent story – and the second (or third) in two years, after Real Oviedo were promoted last season.

  1. Good to see coverage of La Liga 2. I am a Cadiz fan and really appreciate it. Perhaps a story on the financial goings on with the renaming of the stadium to JP Financial and the listing of a key U.S. firm Nomadar (NOMA) out of Marshal Texas, now listed on the NASDAQ exchange.

Nomadar Corp., a sport technology business, focuses on developing and operating sport technology platforms. It offers high performance training programs for young athletes in soccer programs. The company also operates the Mirandilla Stadium and holds trademark rights to the Magico Gonzalez brand.

It serves professional sports teams, athletes, coaches, recreational sports enthusiasts, and end user customers. The company was formerly known as Sportech City USA, Corp. and changed its name to Nomadar Corp. in December 2023. The company was incorporated in 2023 and is based in Marshall, Texas. Nomadar Corp. operates as a subsidiary of Sport City Cadiz S.L.
