“It’s a balance” – Ballon d’Or winner compares Arda Guler to Phil Foden

Real Madrid fans who were excited about the arrival of legitimate wonderkid Arda Guler have had to wait a long time to get their rewards.

Injury and the difficulties of getting into a top team at such a young age meant it took until this weekend for him to get his first goal, coming late against Celta Vigo.

Michael Owen spoke to AS about a variety of subjects, but it was his thoughts on Guler which really caught our attention. Owen burst onto the scene at an even younger age than Guler, but it may have cost him later in his career:

“It’s a balance when you’re a youngster. You can play every week at a smaller team, or you can learn, train and play with great players [at a bigger club]. That’s invaluable experience.”

He noted Phil Foden’s slow and steady development as an example. Guler may have to be patient, but chances will come.

“Modric and Kroos aren’t going to last forever. There’s going to be a real opportunity at Real Madrid for these young midfielders, there’s a great chance for a long career there, for the right person.”

Will that person be Guler? Bit by bit, we’re going to find out.
