This weekend’s Basque derby in La Liga between Eibar and Real Sociedad may be called off due to pollution from a collapsed nearby landfill site.
The Basque government recommends that all sports in the Zaldibur, Eibar and Ermua areas this weekend be called off following the collapse of the Zaldivar landfill site nearby.
The match at Eibar’s Ipurua stadium is scheduled to be played on Sunday with a 4.30pm (local time) kick-off but it is now in major doubt due to fears over the level of air pollution.
Cadena Ser report that the home club have already confirmed they will work with the authorities on the matter and they will not offer resistance if they are advised to call off the game.
However, the local City Hall is now saying that the game should be safe to go in head but the conflicting messages mean that the scheduled fixture is now in doubt.
