Valverde: We have not met our end of season expectations

Ernesto Valverde has claimed that his side have failed to meet their end of season objectives, after they lost in the Copa del Rey final.

Defeat to Marcelino's side prevented them from winning a second successive domestic double since Valverde joined the club back in 2017.

FC Barcelona secured their eighth La Liga title in 11 seasons, but they crashed out of Champions League at the semi final stage and failed to live up to their favourites tag against Valencia.

"A month ago we celebrated the league title, and the potential for a treble.

"We created such high expectations and we have not been able to live up to them.

"We are all upset to lose in the final, but it is better to reach this stage and lose than go out in the quarter finals.

"I cannot fault the players today, they gave everything and I do not think it was a question of mentality, more just that Valencia were the better team on the night."

Valverde was again asked about his future, and he reiterated that he is happy at the Camp Nou, but declined to comment any further on what may happen in the coming weeks.

Club President Josep Bartomeu was also asked whether or not Valverde would remain in charge for the 2019-20 campaign, and again confirmed his eagerness for the former Athletic Bilbao boss to remain at the club.
