Xabi Alonso in line for Real Sociedad return

Xabi Alonso will leave his role as Real Madrid academy coach at the end of the season, to return to his first club Real Sociedad.

Alonso, who took on a role with the Los Blancos youth set up back at the start of the 2018-19 campaign – leading them to a title success last month, has opted to return to the Anoeta.

He will be joined by former team mates Xabi Prieto and Imanol Agirretxe, as Sociedad club president Jokin Aperribay looks to overhaul their youth structure for 2019-20.

Real Madrid offered Alonso a promotion, to manager their third string side (Juvenil A), and he was also offered the chance to become assistant to Julian Nagelsmann when he takes over at RB Leipzig this summer.

Alonso made over 100 appearances for La Real before moving to Liverpool in 2004, where he won the Champions League in 2005.

After returning to Real Madrid after a stint with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich to end his playing career he has since completing his UEFA Pro Licence – meaning he can now manage in La Liga.
