Copa del Rey title or bust for Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde must win the Copa del Rey final against Valencia or face dismissal, report Diario AS.

The piece comes a day after Marca stated the under-fire Coach was 'on edge of abyss' following the nature of his side’s Champions League defeat against Liverpool.

The report cites how the Blaugrana were considering the Coach’s future following last season’s disastrous quarter-final exit of the competition at the hands of Roma.

That time round, he was told that he must lift the Copa or face being sacked with the Catalan giants then easing to a five-goal final victory over Sevilla.

Last season, the Catalan giants blew a 4-1 first leg advantage to be eliminated 4-4 but the nature of their elimination to Liverpool this season may have more severe consequences.

Valverde’s side face Valencia in the Copa showpiece later this month and failure to win that would result in his dismissal at the end of the campaign, claims the report.

Valverde has come under criticism for his conservative team selection and for his use of Philippe Coutinho, who was one of a number of players to underwhelm massively on the night.

Despite renewing his contract at the Camp Nou a few months ago, Marca say this agreement is ‘not unbreakable’ and Valverde’s future at the club is now extremely precarious.
