Rayo Vallecano are the first side to be relegated from La Liga in 2018-19 after they lost 4-1 away at Levante earlier today.
The side from the south of Madrid gave themselves a fighting chance of avoiding the drop with their first home win against rivals Real Madrid last weekend – however their form against sides around them in the table came back to haunt them.
Relegation rivals Levante took a big step towards survival with the win, with a five point gap now separating them from the drop zone, although they played a game more than four of the bottom five sides.
Rayo boss Paco Jemez had said he hoped to take the relegation battle right to the last day, following their win over Zinedine Zidane's side, but their fate has now been confirmed.
They host Real Valladolid next weekend, before a trip to Celta Vigo on the final day, but with head to head record outranking goal difference in La Liga – they are unable to make up the ground on 17th place Girona.
