Barcelona in Copa del Rey quarter-finals, subject to appeal

Ousmane Dembele netted a brace and Lionel Messi scored as Barcelona progressed to the Copa del Rey quarter-finals with a 4-2 over Levante on aggregate.

However, Barca’s place in the competition may still be in doubt after Levante president Quico Catalan confirmed his club would lodge a complaint to the Spanish FA over the alleged playing of an ineligible player in last week’s first leg.

A report in El Mundo claims that one of Barca’s players for their first leg defeat– Juan Brandáriz , better known as Chumi – was not sanctioned to play in the match due to being banned whilst playing for the club’s B side.

Ernesto Valverde’s side are the holders of the competition and are going for their fourth title in five seasons, while they have lifted the Copa trophy on 30 occasions previously.

They had lost the first leg 2-1 at Levante with a much-changed team but recalled the majority of their stars for the return match at the Camp Nou, where they subsequently triumphed 3-0.
