La Liga Week 13 round-up: Sevilla move top, Valencia win again

Sevilla moved top of La Liga in Week 13 as Valencia won again, Villarreal finally triumphed at home and Athletic Bilbao slipped into the relegation zone.

Alaves’ superb start to the season was halted by Leganes, who nicked a 1-0 win at Butarque on Friday evening.

Lega had been showing signs of recovery before the international break, and Youssef En-Nesyri’s only goal extended their unbeaten run to four games.

Valencia defeated Rayo Vallecano 3-0 on Saturday to make it back-to-back League victories for the first time in 2018-19.

Santi Mina followed up his brace against Young Boys with another on Saturday, before Kevin Gameiro rounded off the result and Rayo lost Luis Advincula to a late red card.

Huesca’s wait for a win went on as they squandered the lead twice to draw 2-2 with Levante.

Christian Rivera and Xabi Etxeita scored either side of half-time to put Huesca ahead, but Roger Marti and Emmanuel Boateng cancelled out both goals, leaving the new boys without a victory since the opening day.

Athletic Bilbao suffered a similar fate against Getafe, who held the Basques to their ninth draw of the campaign.

Peru Nolaskoain netted for Athletic midway through the second half, but Getafe lived up to their plucky reputation, equalising through Jaime Mata 10 minutes later.

Sevilla capitalised on Barcelona’s draw with Atletico Madrid as they took first place with a 1-0 victory over Real Valladolid on Sunday.

The match was decided on just the half-hour mark, when Andre Silva fired in his eighth Liga goal of the season.

Girona moved level on points with Real Madrid, claiming bragging rights in a 3-1 win against Catalan rivals Espanyol.

Cristhian Stuani pipped Borja Iglesias in the battle of in-form frontmen, scoring twice in the opening six minutes, while his Espanyol counterpart saw his second-half strike cancelled out further by Seydou Doumbia at the death.

Finally, Villarreal ended their season-long wait for a home win in La Liga, beating the wildly-inconsistent Real Betis 2-1.

Gerard Moreno and Samuel Chukwueze bagged themselves a goal each to ease the pressure on Coach Javi Calleja, despite Giovani Lo Celso’s late consolation.
