La Liga Week 9 round-up: Espanyol go second

Espanyol went second with victory over Huesca in La Liga Week 9, while Real Valladolid continued their resurgence under Ronaldo.

Getafe ended a four-game winless run on Sunday, beating capital rivals Rayo Vallecano 2-1.

Dimitri Foulquier’s opener and a Sergio Akieme own goal left Raul de Tomas’ late consolation in vain, while Rayo’s fifth match without a victory was capped off by a red card to Oscar Trejo.

Athletic Bilbao, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with Basque neighbours Eibar to prolong their wait for a first win since the opening day of the season.

Charles gave Eibar an early lead from the penalty spot, but Inaki Williams equalised just four minutes later for a share of the spoils.

Espanyol, on the other hand, had no such problems, easily dispatching basement boys Huesca in a 2-0 victory.

Borja Iglesias showed exactly why the Catalans made him their record signing over the summer, bagging a brace to leave them only behind League leaders Barcelona.

Finally, Real Valladolid snuck into La Liga’s top six, triumphing 1-0 at Europa League qualifiers Real Betis.

Antonito’s goal 10 minutes before half-time secured a fourth straight win for the Pucela, who have now lost just once since they were bought by the former Barcelona and Real Madrid striker.
