La Liga Week 8: Real Sociedad rule the Basque Country

La Liga Week 8 saw Real Sociedad claim bragging rights in the Basque derby but Cristhian Stuani’s goals once more fail to fire Girona to victory.

Friday’s showdown at San Mames paired two off-form sides in La Real and Athletic Bilbao, and it was the visitors who came away with a 3-1 win.

Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty gave them the lead, before Iker Muniain equalised just two minutes later.

However, two second-half goals from Luca Sangalli and Oyarzabal, again from the spot, moved La Real into the top 10, while plunging Eduardo Berizzo and Athletic further into the abyss.

Girona’s winless run was extended to four games after Eibar came back from behind to beat the Catalans 2-1.

Stuani became La Liga top scorer with a first-half brace, cancelling out Charles’ penalty, yet Anaitz Arbilla and Sergi Enrich not only earned Los Armeros their first away victory of the season but also their first since beating Eusebio Sacristan’s side back in May.

Levante, meanwhile, made it back-to-back wins for the first time in 2018-19 as they triumphed 1-0 over Getafe.

Enis Bardhi’s fine free kick and a red card to Francisco Portillo rubberstamped the three points and condemned Getafe to a fourth match without success.

Finally, Leganes continued their climb up the table with a second victory in three games, beating fellow strugglers Rayo Vallecano 1-0.

Guido Carrillo’s second goal of the season decided the mini-Madrid derby in Lega’s favour.
