Varane on ‘The Best’: It’s a team game

Real Madrid defender and France international Raphael Varane insists being shortlisted on FIFA’s The Best award is ‘not an objective’.

The central defender starred for club and country in 2018, being the only footballer to lift both the Champions League and World Cup titles this year.

“This is not something I focus on, I do not see it as an objective,” the 25-year-old told reporters, as cited by Marca.

“Nobody has spoken of it in the international team, we all know it is for the best individual but football is a team game, and we showed we were the strongest team. Nothing else matters.

“Last season was exceptional for me and to do better…I do not know, maybe I could score 40 goals.

“But there are lots of players who were great but did not win as many club trophies, like N’Golo Kante or Paul Pogba, for example.”
