La Liga Wk3: Derbi fever!

La Liga Week 3 was hit by derby fever, with Eibar and Real Betis claiming bragging rights and Valencia having theirs taken away.

The weekend started on a dour note as Getafe and Real Valladolid played out a stalemate, but Charles decided a dramatic Basque derby, his injury-time winner securing Eibar a 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad.

Los Armeros had lost both of their opening games but showed character to come back from Willian Jose’s early penalty as Barcelona loanee Marc Cardona scored the equaliser.

Villarreal’s miserable start to the campaign continued with a 1-0 defeat to Girona, who picked up their first victory under Eusebio Sacristan.

Despite the Yellow Submarine dominating possession, the Catalans had more attempts on target – one of which was Cristhian Stuani’s first goal of the season.

Athletic Bilbao’s trip to Rayo Vallecano was postponed due to safety concerns over the new boys’ stadium, but what was Vallecas’ loss was Ciutat de Valencia’s gain as it oversaw four goals between Levante and Valencia on Sunday.

Roger Marti twice put the hosts ahead, but they were pegged back on each occasion by Denis Cheryshev and a Dani Parejo penalty.

Los Che pushed for a late winner after Coke’s red card, but they remain winless in La Liga after three rounds of fixtures.

Alaves, meanwhile, recorded their first victory of the season, beating away-day specialists Espanyol 2-1.

Los Periquitos had not lost an away game since mid-April, and they looked like prolonging that trend when Leo Baptistao buried a penalty.

However, Borja Baston became the first player to score goals for Alaves and Eibar, before Ruben Sobrino found the winner two minutes later.

Finally, Betis won the battle of Benito Villamarin as Joaquin Sanchez’s late header inflicted a 1-0 defeat on arch-rivals Sevilla.

Sergio Canales had an earlier finish ruled out by VAR, but Roque Mesa was controversially sent off for a second yellow card, despite Betis goalkeeper Pau Lopez seemingly running into the midfielder.
