Lopetegui wins on Bernabeu bow

Julen Lopetegui won on his Santiago Bernabeu bow as Real Madrid restarted La Liga with a 2-0 victory over Getafe.

Goals from Dani Carvajal and Gareth Bale either side of half-time were enough to hand Lopetegui his first competitive win in the Spanish top flight, less than a week after Madrid lost the European Super Cup to arch-rivals Atletico.

Raphael Varane, Casemiro and Luka Modric were substitutes for the Coach’s first Liga match, but Keylor Navas kept his place in goal ahead of Thibaut Courtois.

Getafe had not beaten Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu since February 2008, although Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to add to his 23 goals against Jose Bordalas' side after his transfer to Juventus.

Bale sent two early warning signs when he bent an effort on to the far post, before finding the crossbar with a powerful header.

Nonetheless, Carvajal was more accurate with his headed attempt, looping David Soria's poor punch into the roof of his net.

Sergio Ramos almost bagged himself a brace, but his half-volley was disallowed for an infringement and a push on him didn't result in a penalty as Karim Benzema was adjudged offside.

Geta, for their part, offered plenty of derby bite against their neighbours but only had a tame scissor kick to show for it, as well as seven yellow cards.

Madrid came close to a third goal when a loose ball dropped to Marco Asensio on the edge of Los Azulones' box, but his thunderous strike clipped the post.
