Kovacic: Madrid? We’ll see…

Mateo Kovacic cryptically answered ‘we’ll see’ about staying at Real Madrid after Croatia reached the World Cup semi-finals.

Kovacic told Marca less than a month ago that it would be ‘best’ if he left Madrid for first-team opportunities elsewhere, and he remained coy when asked about his future a second time.

“Do I want to stay at Madrid next season? We’ll see,” remarked the 24-year-old after Croatia’s penalties victory over Russia on Saturday.

AS reports the former Inter midfielder is willing to force an exit but warns Madrid are ‘delighted’ with his performances and consider him ‘one of the most promising players in world football’.

Consequently, the ‘only option’ for Kovacic to leave would be for him to ask Los Blancos directly, but – similar to the case with Alvaro Morata – his club are in a strong bargaining position.

This is because he still has three years left on his contract, which includes a release clause in the region of €500m.
