Unzue admits ‘I wanted another year’

Outgoing Celta Vigo Coach Juan Carlos Unzue has expressed regret over the club’s decision to dismiss him: “I wanted to continue.”

The former assistant at Barcelona is leaving the Galician club after just one season in which they finished a disappointing 13th in the league standings.

“I wanted to continue because the second year of management at a club are usually simpler,” Unzue told a press conference on Monday.

“But the decision has been made by the club, upon whom it depended and still, I must place on record that I am very grateful.

“Defrauding? That is a very aggressive word and it is not in my language or my thoughts, I have not deceived anyone and I have tried my best at this club.

“Many people thought we would continue the recent success of the club but they have not looked at their history or the fact that a new Coach and new players takes time to work.

“I was told of the decision at the end of April in a meeting, but I knew this would not be an easy year because this is a big club with a good team.

“We tried to fight for Europe and I think we did but we did not step up in moments of responsibility.”
