Real Betis suffered their first defeat in over two months as Athletic Bilbao secured three points in the meeting at San Mames.
Iker Munain opened the scoring with fourteen minutes before Aritz Aduriz clinched the win in the last minute, after Betis had a late goal controversially disallowed.
The visitors also hit the crossbar twice in the closing stages as they chased a late leveller but in truth the hosts deserved the win on the balance of play.
The victory means Athletic temporarily move into 13th while it also confirms Valencia’s qualification to next season’s Champions League as they can no longer be mathematically caught by Betis.
