La Liga Wk35: Real run Basque rule

Two own goals won Real Sociedad the Basque derby and Carlos Bacca’s hat-trick took down Celta Vigo in La Liga Week 35.

However, getting the weekend under way were Espanyol and Las Palmas, both of whom played out a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Jonathan Calleri’s penalty gave the already-relegated islanders an early lead, but David Gallego was to enjoy an unbeaten debut in Espanyol’s dugout.

Gerard Moreno’s equaliser with 14 minutes to spare was seemingly enough to keep the Catalans in La Liga for another season.

La Real, meanwhile, made it four wins out of five under caretaker Imanol Alguacil in style, beating arch-rivals Athletic Bilbao 3-1.

It was an afternoon to forget for Mikel San Jose, who gifted not one but two goals to the San Sebastian side, sandwiched by a Mikel Oyarzabal effort.

Athletic did pull one back from the penalty spot through Raul Garcia and gain a man advantage after Ruben Pardo was sent off late on, but they nonetheless slumped to a fourth game without a win and fell to 14th in the table.

Finally, Villarreal ended Celta Vigo’s hopes of European football next season with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over the Galicians.

Bacca’s hat-trick inside 38 minutes was enough to kill off Celta – who went a fourth match without a win – despite Pione Sisto’s equaliser, before Samu Castillejo rubberstamped the result for the Yellow Submarine.
