Betis leapfrog Sevilla into top six

Real Betis moved into La Liga’s top six for the first time this season with a controversial win at Geatfe on Monday evening.

Sergio Leon’s late strike sealed the victory for Los Verdiblancos in a fascinating second half which was dominated by the hosts, who could not break the deadlock.

Franscisco Portillo saw his penalty saved by Antonio Adan while Vitorino Antunes’s free-kick rattled the post and bounced agonisingly across the goal-line and to safety.

Leon then opened the scoring three minutes from time with an instinctive finish from Antonio Barragan’s run and cut-back, but there was further late drama.

Getafe’s Leandro Cabrera header was adjudged not to have crossed the line in the dying moments as Adan scrambled clear, with no goal-line technology in the league and replays proving inconclusive.

Betis have now jumped into sixth place, above city rivals Sevilla with eight league games remaining.
