La Liga Wk28: Bipolar Basques

Sunday’s action in La Liga Week 28 saw Real Sociedad slump to yet another defeat and Athletic Bilbao show their Basque rivals how it’s done.

La Real had seemingly turned a corner with a win and draw in their last two games, but they allowed Espanyol to overtake them, going down 2-1 at Cornella-El Prat.

Leo Baptistao fired in the first of a second-half salvo, before Gerard Moreno staked his claim for a place in Spain’s World Cup squad with his 12th League goal of the season.

Despite Willian Jose pulling one back for Eusebio Sacristan’s side, they drop to 14th in the table, although some 13 points clear of the relegation zone.

Athletic, on the other hand, closed in on the top half with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Leganes.

Los Leones may have lost to Olympique Marseille in the Europa League midweek, but they Raul Garcia scored twice in just seven minutes to flush any remains of that defeat out of his team’s system.

Whereas Kuko Ziganda’s men lie just two points off the top 10, Leganes have now won just one of their last 10 in La Liga.
